Colonial Cup for Good Night Shirt
CAMDEN, S.C. -- Good Night Shirt raced to his third Grade 1 victory in National Steeplechase Association competition and may have wrapped up the Eclipse Award on Sunday in the $150,000 Colonial Cup steeplechase.
The 6-year-old Harold Via-owned gelding, ridden by William Dowling, edged Three Carat by 2 lengths, running 2 3/4 miles in 5:19.
The victory was worth $90,000 to the winner, sending his earnings for the season to an NSA single-season record of $314,163.
Following McDynamo's sixth-place finish, owner Michael Moran said he would retire the 10-year-old three-time Eclipse Award winner. McDynamo finished his career as the only U.S. steeplechaser to earn more than $1 million.
"He's retired," Moran said. "When you're 10 years old, it's like trying to play football if you're 42 or 43. I've had so much fun with the horse. He doesn't owe me a thing. I would just feel greedy if I tried to run him another year."
